2010 Priorities and Challenges for CIOs
The good news for 2010 and beyond is that
while a "cautious optimism" remains, most
businesses will be increasing their IT
spending, looking to contain costs rather
than reduce costs. For 2010, 52% of
organizations say their IT spending will
increase from the previous year and 17% of
organizations will move from cost reduction
to cost containment modes. Business
priorities will reflect a "back to business"
approach, with virtualization, security,
backup, network upgrades, managing data
growth (storage), and improved business
intelligence at the forefront. Businesses
will be looking to increase efficiency,
reduce cost, and gain operational maturity.
Most organizations have indicated that their
top IT priorities for 2010 and beyond include
increased use of server virtualization,
information security initiatives, and
improved data backup and recovery. Other
priorities include desktop virtualization,
major database deployments or upgrades, and
mobile workforce enablement. The greatest
spending change relative to 2009 for most
businesses will occur in virtualization
software, with 59% of organizations
increasing their spending on such
enhancements, 55% of organizations will
increase spending on security and 54% will
increase spending on storage hardware.
Increased use of cloud computing services
lags behind, but remains a priority for some
organizations.
Enhancing virtual desktop infrastructure and
consolidating more physical servers onto
virtual platforms is a top initiative among
48% of organizations. Virtual desktop
infrastructure will drive major changes,
including new rack servers, new blade
servers, and new security solutions.

Cloud vs. Premise Computing
Cloud computing has changed the way in which
information is stored and applications are
run, allowing access to applications and
documents from anywhere in the world. Rather
than hosting applications and data on an
on-premise server or desktop computer,
everything is hosted in the "cloud"-an
assemblage of computers and
servers accessed via the Internet. Fast
evolving from a futuristic technology into a
true alternative for companies looking for
cost effective storage and server solutions,
there are many benefits to cloud computing.
But how does it stack up against premise?
Check out these
pros...
