From Floppy Disks to Cloud Consulting: Nortec Celebrates 30 Years of Serving Clients

President and founder of Nortec Andrew Grose wasn’t thinking about providing managed IT services when he started Nortec in 1991. At the time, half of all businesses didn’t have a network. Floppy disks were carried between departments to share spreadsheets and files. If you were around for these “sneakernet” days, you remember how inefficient it was. Nortec offered an alternative. 30 years later, the solutions we provide have evolved, but we’ve stayed true to a founding principle: Make it easier for our clients to do their work by taking care of their technology. See how we’ve served clients for the past 3 decades and how we’ll continue to support your needs in the years to come.

Why working with a top Microsoft Partner matters for your businessMeet the Team: Joe Piccolino, Director of Strategic Accounts

- When did you start working at Nortec and why Nortec?
In March 2016. Nortec gave me the opportunity to continue working in the latest technology (software, rather than hardware/manufacturing), while allowing me the focus location around Pittsburgh and Eastern PA that I was looking for. With a wife and 3 young children at home, I sought a role that didn’t require travel, yet still kept me developing strong customer relationships in the technology sector.
- In your role, who do you help and how?
While definitely not as tech-savvy as our consultants, I support our customers needs by finding the right solutions with the right people on our team. Listening first, then moving and helping quickly! To me, sales has always been about developing relationships where the customer trusts in you and, ultimately, achieving value in providing solutions for their specific needs.
- Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
In the midst of my kids high school graduations and college searches and keeping my wife on her toes. Hopefully, still working with Nortec, growing long-standing relationships and learning the new solutions of the day.
- What’s something surprising that people may not know about you?
Some may say funny, odd or surprising … but I have a philosophy about dessert food: If it has fruit, I don’t eat it. No apple/cherry/berry pies or cobblers. No banana stuff. Only chocolate/vanilla flavors of ice cream, cakes, puddings. Oh, and cheesecake is good! Pumpkin is as close to “fruity” as I’ll go.
- Where was the last place you traveled?
Went to Aruba last year with my family. It was the second time in my life and the first for the kids. A fantastic island vacation!
Removing Vulnerabilities for Efficiency3

Nortec began working with Efficiency3, a Falls Church performance management company, after they realized they were exposed to several vulnerabilities. They had no business continuity and disaster recovery plans in place and, as a result, were in danger from threats ranging from fire to cybercriminals.
The company was also unable to easily and safely offer employees the flexibility to work remotely. Without this capability, they would be unable to serve their clients effectively.
To remedy these vulnerabilities, Efficiency3 CEO Joseph Zaloom partnered with Nortec, and we immediately began to work on solutions that could give his team the confidence and flexibility they needed to collaborate with ease. We recommended Office 365 and implemented it so that the team could share files and apps easily, no matter where they were located. This offered the company greater flexibility and more security on an ongoing basis.

If you have any questions about your security or just want reassurance that you’re on the right path, get in touch today. We’d love to talk to you about your ongoing security needs.
