Reston, Virginia

Reston Virginia is a place in the county of Fairfax in the state of Virginia. The city was influenced, during the planning process, by a method of city planning called the Garden City Movement. This advocated for green spaces and integrated greenbelts in with the industrial elements of a city. Because of this, Reston is filled with green spaces and parks along with shopping centers and residential areas. Reston has been ranked as the top place to live in Virginia.

Reston’s population is estimated to be just over 60 thousand people. Before the area was colonized, the region was part of the Northern Neck Proprietary, which was a swath of land granted by King Charles II to Lord Thomas Fairfax. This is the individual from which the county gets its name. What is now Reston remained in the Fairfax family until 1852.

In 1961, Robert E Simon, a real estate entrepreneur whose family once owned Carnegie Hall, bought a large portion of the land with funds that came from the proceeds of that landmark. He renamed the region after himself, using his initials R.E.S. to form the name Reston. In 1964, on his 50th birthday, Simon launched the community, laying out seven principles to be used as guiding axioms for life in Reston.

Reston is one of just a few communities across the nation that have been designated Backyard Wildlife Habitat communities. These communities are ones in which residents are encouraged to maintain backyard meadows and wildflower refuges for healthy and diverse ecosystems.

Near areas such as Silver Spring, Bethesda, and Falls Church, Reston is a wonderful place to work, live, or visit. With a rich history, proximity to all kinds of entertainment, and many cultural touchstones, this region is a diverse area with a strong economy and is filled with things to learn and experience. With cold weather in the winter and warm weather in the summer, this region experiences all four seasons throughout the year and draws visitors all year round.
