Washington DC
Washington DC, sometimes known simply as ‘DC,’ or ‘Washington,’ is the capital city in the United States of America. It is located on the east bank of the Potomac River and lies between Maryland and Virginia. The city was named after founding father and inaugural president, George Washington.
The phrase ‘District of Columbia’ comes from Columbia, which is the female national personification of the United States. The name Columbia originates from the surname of Christopher Columbus, the explorer who came to what is now known as America in the late 1400s and began an era of globalization and European colonization.

Now, Washington DC holds the governing bodies of the nation, including all three branches of federal government. The city is divided into four parts, centering on the Capitol Building, and has a population of nearly 690,000. This makes the city of Washington DC one of the twenty most populous cities in the country.
